How Much Should I Spend on a Suit?

When it comes to buying a high-quality suit that will last for years, it's worth considering spending over $1200. While this may seem like a significant investment, a well-made suit can be a valuable addition to your wardrobe and can even save you money in the long run.

Here are a few reasons why it's worth investing in a suit that costs more than $1200:

  1. Superior Quality Materials: A suit made from high-quality materials, such as 100% wool or cashmere, will not only look better, but it will also last longer than a suit made from cheaper materials. The fabrics used in high-end suits are often more durable, breathable, and comfortable than their lower-priced counterparts.

  2. Superior Construction: Higher-end suits are often handcrafted with great attention to detail. The stitching is precise, and the lining is often made from breathable materials. These small details add up to a suit that fits and feels better, allowing you to move freely and look sharp.

  3. Timeless Style: While cheaper suits may follow current trends, a more expensive suit will often have a classic, timeless style. This means that you can wear it for years to come without worrying about it going out of style.

  4. Tailoring: A good tailor can make a huge difference in the fit and look of your suit. When you invest in a high-quality suit, you'll have the flexibility to take it to a tailor and have it custom fitted to your body. This can make a world of difference in the way the suit looks and feels.

Overall, investing in a high-quality suit that costs over $1200 can be a smart choice for those who wear suits frequently or want a suit that will last for years. While the initial investment may be higher, the superior materials, construction, and timeless style of a more expensive suit can make it a worthwhile investment.

Do I Still Need A Suit?

Suits are an essential part of a professional wardrobe. They are versatile, timeless, and can make you look and feel confident. However, owning a suit is not enough. Getting your suit tailored is equally important, and it can make a significant difference in how you look and feel.

Tailoring is the process of altering a garment to fit a specific body shape. In the case of a suit, tailoring involves adjusting the jacket and trousers to fit your body measurements. Here are some reasons why getting your suit tailored is important:

  1. Perfect fit

One of the primary reasons to get your suit tailored is to achieve a perfect fit. When you buy an off-the-rack suit, it is designed to fit a standard body type. However, everyone's body is unique, and it is rare to find a suit that fits perfectly without any alterations. A tailored suit will hug your body in all the right places, creating a sleek and polished appearance.

  1. Enhanced appearance

A well-tailored suit can enhance your appearance significantly. It can make you look taller, slimmer, and more confident. A suit that fits well can accentuate your best features and create a streamlined silhouette. On the other hand, an ill-fitting suit can make you look sloppy and unprofessional.

  1. Improved comfort

A suit that is too tight or too loose can be uncomfortable to wear. It can restrict your movement and make you feel self-conscious. A tailored suit will ensure that you are comfortable and can move around freely. The tailor will adjust the suit to your body shape, allowing you to breathe and move comfortably.

  1. Longevity

A well-tailored suit will last longer than an off-the-rack suit. When a suit fits well, it puts less stress on the seams and fabric. As a result, the suit will not wear out as quickly, and you will not have to replace it as often.

  1. Personal style

When you get your suit tailored, you can personalize it to your style. You can choose the fabric, color, and style of the suit. You can also add personal touches such as pocket squares, lapel pins, and cufflinks. A tailored suit can reflect your personal style and make you stand out from the crowd.

In conclusion, getting your suit tailored is essential if you want to look and feel your best. A well-tailored suit will fit perfectly, enhance your appearance, improve comfort, last longer, and reflect your personal style. So, the next time you buy a suit, make sure to budget for tailoring. You will be amazed at the difference it can make.

It’s important to remember that taking in or reducing the amount of fabric is doable, however, you can’t make something bigger, at least not by much. What determines what’s possible is the extra material found under the seams or hems of the garments. Well made pants and jackets,  will usually contain more allowances, future-proofing for the changing size of the wearer over time. Less expensive items usually have little extra material to let out as a means of keeping costs down.

Jacket Alterations

-Taking in and letting out what is available at the seams of a jacket is fairly simple and routine alterations. Lengthening, and Shortening Sleeves on a jacket is one of the easiest parts of a jacket to change.  Making sleeves slightly longer or shorter, by a 1/2″ to 1”  is a pretty routine procedure.

Suited.jpg

-Shortening a Jacket

While lengthening a jacket is impossible due to the lack of fabric, shortening from the bottom is possible provided you are only reducing length by a small amount. If you take off too much length, the pockets and bottom button will be close to the bottom.

Alterations to Trousers

-Hems, Cuffs, Leg Length Tapering Leg Width

Pant legs can be made shorter, they can also be lengthened depending on what hem material was left at the bottom. Quality dress pants are sold unhemmed with a lot of extra fabric at the bottom, but a tailor will not leave more than a couple of inches under the hem when they’re finished. In most cases pant legs cannot be made larger, they can however easily be tapered, especially from the knee to the bottom if the leg opening is too wide at the bottom.

-Taking in/Letting out the Waist

Pant manufacturers are usually generous in providing extra material to let out the waistband and upper part of the seat from the waist toward your rear end. The exact amount varies by the size, but at least 2-3″ is found at the center rear seam.

Men’s clothing items purchased at other stores can also be altered at Tom Nox Men’s Shop. Suits and other clothing purchased from other stores generally take 2 weeks to complete tailoring unless we have a large workload of other alterations. Contact us about the items you need to be altered by phone or by bringing the item into the store and we will let you know what the capabilities are and timeframe for completion.

At Tom Nox we keep track of all measurements and alterations made to get you fitted even quicker on your next visit.

Understanding Goodyear Welt vs. Blake Welt Shoes | Tom Nox Men’s Shop | Murray, Utah

When searching for shoes you have likely found that there is quite a drastic range in pricing. You have probably asked the question, what’s the difference between a pair of shoes that cost $100 and shoes that are $1,000? Features like quality of leather, brand name and where they are made are all factors. The largest differentiator is the quality of the construction. When I refer to construction, how the sole is attached to the upper of the shoe. To help explain, here is a breakdown of a shoe:

The Upper: The leather or canvas that is seen above the sole when a shoe is worn. Pretty much it is everything that covers the foot when you are wearing the shoe.

The Insole: The material on the inside of the shoe that your foot touches when wearing the shoe.

The Outsole: The material on the bottom and exterior of the sole, it’s what touches the ground when you are walking.

The Welt: On better-constructed shoes, the welt is a strip of leather which runs along the perimeter of the outsole. Its primary function is for attaching the upper to the outsole.

The Last:  The last is what gives a shoe its shape. Lasts are used for both design and construction.

Higher quality dress shoes and boots are commonly constructed in one of two ways. These two methods are known as Goodyear welt and Blake stitching.

Goodyearwelt.jpg

Goodyear Welt: Shoemakers take a strip of leather and sew that leather to the upper of the shoe. The sole is then sewed to the same strip of leather. The two-level stitching makes it incredibly easy to resole a goodyear welted shoe. Because the welt acts as a buffer between the insole and the outsole, removing the old sole and attaching a new one can be done by machine or by hand and without a specific machine. A goodyear welted shoe tends to be more water resistant as a result of the stitches being separated by a leather barrier. Shoes that are goodyear welted generally are more durable, tend to last longer and are comfortable.

Blakestitch.jpg

Blake Stitch:  On a Blake stitched shoe, the upper is sewn directly to the sole from the inside of the shoe. Although not as water resistant, a Blake stitch offers more flexibility to the shoe itself.  Because it is a simpler construction than a goodyear welt, it tends to be less expensive. A Blake stitched constructed shoe allows it to be resoled once the outsole is worn out or damaged. Blake welting is also ideal when looking for a close-cut sole. Because there are no exterior stitches, the body of the outsole can be cut extremely close to the upper.

These two methods of shoe construction are just a few of many. The only way to know what you prefer is by trying them out. Lucky for you, UWM Men’s Shop and Tom Nox Men’s Shop has examples of both for you to try for yourself. Stop by today!
